Watch the first episode of The Martech Show now: Why so many martech solutions?!

The Martech Show Episode 1

We’ve shipped our first episode of The Martech Show — our new hybrid webinar-podcast series “where marketing and technology collide.” A big thank you to my two guests: Jeff Eckman of Blue Green, our collaborators on the ever-expanding martech landscape, and to Anita Brearton of CabinetM, our sponsor for this episode.

Our ovearching topic was “Why the $#@! are there 8,000 martech solutions?”

Jeff covered the latest updates to the still-growing Martech 5000 database — after deduping new submissions, updates, and removed solutions, the landscape expanded to 8,097 platforms and apps. (Are we missing yours? Register and add it here.)

I walked through a model explaining the relationship between different kinds of platforms and apps in SaaS that enables the massive supply-side growth of this landscape.

SaaS Platforms and Apps on The Martech Show

Anita added her perspective on expansion and consolidation in the martech landscape through the lens of the thousands of firms that use CabinetM to manage their martech stacks. Jeff weighed in with his experience at Blue Green in building a specialist app for customer journey analytics. And we got to take a few audience questions, with Carlos Doughty of Martech Alliance making an impromptu appearance.

Anita also talked with us about the amazing non-profit CabinetM chose for sponsoring the show.

CabinetM was the first sponsor to raise their hand for The Martech Showthank you! — with the unique way we’re handling sponsorship for this first season. A sponsor picks a non-profit cause associated with either pandemic relief or racial justice and equality and makes a meaningful donation on behalf of the show. They then join us on that episode to not only share their perspective about martech, but to also talk about the cause they supported.

CabinetM chose Facing History and Ourselves, which develops curriculum content and professional development on using “lessons of history to challenge teachers and their students to stand up to bigotry and hate,” and made a very generous donation on our behalf.

Facing History and Ourselves

If you’d like to sponsor an episode by supporting a great cause, there are still spots open — please reach out to me.

Our next episode will be in two weeks, with the amazing David Raab — the father of CDP and founder of The CDP Institute. In addition to being the world’s foremost authority on all things CDP, David also has a remarkably dry sense of humor that resonates with my own brand of comic aspiration. It should be amusing as well as educational.

Sign up to join the live studio audience for our Zoom recording (“yay, more Zoom!”) at 11am Eastern on Friday, September 4.

What is a Local Citation? Local SEO

In simple SEO terms, a local citation refers to any mention of your company online. This could be in a business directory, or on an industry-specific site, a blog or any other local website. Although local citations can help you rank in local search results, they are no longer a major ranking factor . However, they are still worth considering in order to promote your business. Common citations you are likely to already know of include listings on business directory websites such as Yell or Thomson Local . A complete citation should include the name, address and phone number of your business. Local citations do not always include a link to your site although they are more valuable if they do. What do they do? Citations help rank your Google Local Pack listing (this was formerly called Google+ Local map) by providing Google with credible sources of information about your business. Citations tell Google that your business exists, is legitimate and that what you say about it is accur...

The beginner’s guide to semantic search: Examples and tools

Ever since Google’s Hummingbird, the term “semantic search” has been thrown around a lot. Yet, the concept is often misunderstood. What is semantic search and how it helps SEO efforts? When people speak to each other, they understand more than just words. They understand the context, non-verbal cues  (facial expressions, nuances of the voice, etc.) and so much more. It comes naturally, so we don’t really appreciate how difficult it is to explain what is being communicated without the help of all “beyond-words” signals. Factors that make the lives of both Google and SEO so difficult Google is trying (and often struggling) to understand what it is that their users want (without actually seeing or hearing them) SEOs are trying to reverse-engineer what it is that Google managed to understand from their users’ queries and how to build pages that meet those mysterious criteria. As Google’s algorithm is getting more mature, it is becoming even more difficult to decode what...
