Smartpod UX Design Changes

Who Are Smartpod

Smartpod builds multi-purpose smartpods to meet all requirements from education, retail, leisure to commercial sectors. You can choose the size, external and internal finishes and Smartpod will build it so that it is bespoke to you. As they would say “you design it.. we build it”

What they wanted

When the team at Smartpod approached Fifteen, they were essentially looking for us to freshen up their website and make them more conversional. They also wanted to include more pages on their website to discuss their offering in better way, which will evidentially drive more traffic to their website.

What we did

The top menu bar

On this section, the initial navigation bar had white text and a transparent background. This made it very hard to read against the header images on each page. After scrolling down, the navigation bar became solid black with white text. This was much more affective and clearer to read. Additionally on the scroll there was also a “call now to speak to one of our team” call to action. Once the user clicks on the CTA the number would appear as shown below.

Our recommendations for this section was to change the navigation menu to black with white text throughout the site. This would make it easier for the user and ensure page titles would not get lost on the pages with clashing header images. We also recommended pulling out the CTA number, rather than having an hover state. This would reduce the effort for the user and would be a more efficient way to get in touch, making it easier and quicker for the user.

Lastly for this section, we changed the layout of the page titles. At the time the Smartpod types were put into a collective category titled “Smartpods”. To make this easier and more clearer for the user our advice was to separate the Smartpod types as individual menu items. We then extended the different types by putting them into categories such as Education, Retail, commercial and Leisure. We then included the individual pod types in a dropdown below the category title. This ensured that the user would be able to find exactly what they were looking for in a more orderly way.

Content

Initially, the content included on the inner pages wasn’t a lot to say the least. The pages were missing a great deal of information that would defiantly benefit the website. Smartpod is an extremely visual brand and having the opportunity to incorporate more images where possible would defiantly make the pages stand out more for the user. For best practice we wanted to ensure that pages were filled with relevant, unique content about each type of pod. This would encourage google to rank each page higher in Google search, which would then bring in more customers and future sales.

Conversion

In the beginning, the conversion rate on the website was almost none existent. Prompting the user with an adequate amount of opportunities to convert was vital. This was achieved by incorporating a number of touch points into the website. For example having a phone number in the navigation menu will be a clear indicator to get in touch and make it easier for the user when landing on the homepage. Another addition was to add a contact form into the header on the homepage. This would just be another way for the user to get in touch to enquire about a product.

With that being said, if the user wasn’t to land on the homepage and instead landed on the ‘Breakout Pod’ page for example – we have included a get in touch form within the footer section of the inners pages. This is a repeated element across the website to ensure that there are enough touch points available for the user regardless of where the user goes. We have included the form in the footer as we wanted to tell a story throughout the pages first. Once the user lands on a page, they will see the page title and introduction text. They will then have a featured section with an image and text. As the user makes their way down the page these elements will be repeated, by also including clear call to actions. Finally, after the user has read all the information about a specific product, they will then see the get in touch form at the bottom of the page. This will encourage the user to want to find out more.

The Results

In addition to the website changes we also obtained social media work for them. Using the style from the new designs on the website, we pushed these across onto social media. The social media work has been very successful and is driving roughly 70% of website traffic. Smartpod have received 182 email clicks, phone clicks and form submissions in September from Facebook and Instagram alone. They have also gone from 1 lead every 2-3 days to 5-6 leads every day now.

Working on this project was a pleasure and the end result was fantastic. The team at Smartpod were very happy to see their new website changes go live and we were more happy to work alongside them.

What is a Local Citation? Local SEO

In simple SEO terms, a local citation refers to any mention of your company online. This could be in a business directory, or on an industry-specific site, a blog or any other local website. Although local citations can help you rank in local search results, they are no longer a major ranking factor . However, they are still worth considering in order to promote your business. Common citations you are likely to already know of include listings on business directory websites such as Yell or Thomson Local . A complete citation should include the name, address and phone number of your business. Local citations do not always include a link to your site although they are more valuable if they do. What do they do? Citations help rank your Google Local Pack listing (this was formerly called Google+ Local map) by providing Google with credible sources of information about your business. Citations tell Google that your business exists, is legitimate and that what you say about it is accur...

The beginner’s guide to semantic search: Examples and tools

Ever since Google’s Hummingbird, the term “semantic search” has been thrown around a lot. Yet, the concept is often misunderstood. What is semantic search and how it helps SEO efforts? When people speak to each other, they understand more than just words. They understand the context, non-verbal cues  (facial expressions, nuances of the voice, etc.) and so much more. It comes naturally, so we don’t really appreciate how difficult it is to explain what is being communicated without the help of all “beyond-words” signals. Factors that make the lives of both Google and SEO so difficult Google is trying (and often struggling) to understand what it is that their users want (without actually seeing or hearing them) SEOs are trying to reverse-engineer what it is that Google managed to understand from their users’ queries and how to build pages that meet those mysterious criteria. As Google’s algorithm is getting more mature, it is becoming even more difficult to decode what...
